Random ramblings

Why hello there, stranger!

It's been forever and a day or two since I posted, but when the sun is shining, the birds are singing, and there is actually green substance growing in the garden, I find it hard to sit still long enough to post anything. (Maybe a case of Spring ADHD?)

I've been productive though..

The first planting of the year....

The daffodils are in full bloom. Aren't they beautiful? I think Carol would call this one "Egg Yolks On Snow" (or something like that). She's very creative with her daffodil names.

Notice anything wrong with this picture?

Notice how there isn't anything green peeking through the dirt?

Well, that's just sick and wrong because 3 weeks ago (or there abouts..before we travelled to paradise) we planted cold crops in this bed. Lettuce, turnips, radishes, and a tiny bit of spinach.

NONE of it has taken. So....

Is it because

A. I have a brown thumb (mainly because my sister Carol stole all the green thumb genes before I was born)

B. There was too much rain right after we planted so everything rotted.

C. The seeds were bad.

or

D. It's too soon. (But I really don't think that is the case here. They really should be showing SOME signs of life).

Tomorrow we replant if the rain holds off or unless I hear screams echoing through cyberspace telling me not to replant yet (I trust you garden bloggers immensely. I'm depending on you to help me be a successful gardener in spite of my brown thumb).

On a brighter note, Prince Charming bought some new "stuff" for the gazebo.

I don't think Sam has left this spot since.

As you can see, he is now taking his meals outside as well. He only comes in to get a new book upon occasion. Well, and to sleep of course. It does get nippy at night.
He just finished The Door Within series, and is now reading Penrod by Booth Tarkington.

Seth lost his other front tooth finally.

For those of you who have read my blog for awhile, you might remember that Seth feels the need to name his teeth after he loses them.

Meet Bob.

He had another tooth he named Bob as well. But he has an uncle named Bob whom he really likes, so maybe that's why he is focused on that name. Bob watched Victoria while we were travelling, that may be a reason he won the honor of having another tooth named after him. I wonder if Bob thinks it was worth it?

Speaking of puppies......

Here are four tired puppies.

Shhh........We don't want to wake them. They look so comfy.

In our house it's against the law to take a nap without a dog to cuddle.

Well, hugs to you all.

I've missed you this week, but when the wild spring calls, it's against the laws of nature to disobey, don't you think?

A Sonshine Day

What a beautiful, glorious, bright, sunny, almost-Spring day!

Today was the first warm day we've had this year. The birds were singing...

(Don't get any ideas Moo!)

It was easy to be motivated to get out the garden rakes and explore for signs of spring beneath the leaves...

Look! I do have crocuses after all! I really do!

While I looked for surprises beneath the leaves, the kids played outside.

We're not sure we remember how to do it without training wheels!

But look at the sister - GO SOPHIE, GO!

Not only was it a beautiful day, but it was a special day, because today was the day that Sam, Sophie, and Seth were baptised by their father.

A big hug to our friends and family who came to watch the kids raise their flag for their Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

The best part of the day!

Going on a Bear Hunt

gonna find a BIG one!
We're not afraid...Uh oh!

This was Seth's favorite book not too long ago (probably still is).

It has a great sing-song rhythm about it. It's a story of a little family that goes on a bear hunt. And as the kids, Prince Charming, and I ventured out today to hopefully see something green and growing in the yard, this book kept running through my head..... or rather this phrase....

Going on a Bear Hunt,

Gonna Find a BIG one!

We're not afraid.....Uh OH!

Racoon Prints...

At least I think those are raccoon prints.

I hope they are! http://monarchbfly.com/would know for sure.

They can't be bear prints. Officially we don't have bears in Indiana, although A3 saw one in the middle of nowhere when he was out on a mountain bike adventure. I trust him. He's smart. He knows what bears look like (although he is the only of the seven who did not inherit the mutant animal gene).

Gotta be raccoons (I like raccoons. They're cute!)

STICKS...MULCH....

Too much mulch...

My sister warned me about this last year.

For the first time in 45 years, the scarlet maple and the sugar maple in the front yard got "little trims". The guys who did it were so nice, and they did all these things so they wouldn't hurt the trees. Instead of cherry pickers, they used ropes and climbed up INTO the tree and took a branch here or there. Carefully analyzing and choosing which branch would stay, and which would go. Mainly the dead ones. The trees really needed it, and my sister, Carol, was quite pleased with the job they did...EXCEPT, that they piled all the small debris up against the tree and convinced me it was God's natural mulch. That the tree would benefit from this pile of it's branches and leaves up against it, keeping it nice and snug through the winter.

Carol had a complete cow over this (is that a 70's or 80's term?). Anyway, she made me rake it all away from the trunk. We did that, but man...I thought that stuff would be more composted by now!

Trash....

Somebody needs to clean up the trash that has escaped the garbage cans....

Junk....

Metal junk....

I'm really proud of my "Metal Garden"

NOT

Prince Charming promised me he would take that to the dump just as soon as he had a free moment....

("Uh, dear? Can you put down your Nintendo DS long enough to go to the dump?"

"What? I'm doing my mind exercises. In a little bit dear.....")

GREEN!

Not Huh..oh!

LOOK!!! Something GREEN and GROWING! Look right THERE!

Finally! Success!

We've found what we were looking for. We've got our "bear."

Now, let's go get some hot chocolate....
